MRA Head Office Refit
Since 1996 the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) have had stewardship of WA’s historic Midland Railway Workshops. Through this time numerous fantastic industrial artefacts and massive structural timbers have been preserved.
When establishing new offices in Perth’s historic GPO building, the MRA asked us to transform some of these precious old timbers into a large boardroom table and collection of mosaic timber wall panelling created from off-cuts. Preserving the industrial narrative of the old wood was an important part of the design brief. Large Jarrah and Oregon beams were carefully reworked, keeping bolt holes and other telling features of the wood’s past life. The boardroom table can be easily dismantled. Mechanical locking fixtures beneath allow the table to separate into flat panel sections for easy storage on a purpose built trolley.
