Stratum 2: Cusp

Stratum 2: Cusp – an edition of six boxes
180 x 180 x 110mm.  Sheoak, Tasmanian Oak, Black Walnut, sterling silver.

The series of artworks entitled Stratum have been created by Peter Cook between the late 90s and the present.  To date there are eight works in the series.  Some Stratum artworks have been created in small limited editions of up to six.  Others are one-off pieces.

“In the late ’90s, Stratum 2 was an early effort to resolve box forms I had been sketching for several years.  These were caricature shapes and cartoon boxes.  I was looking for a more ‘pliable’ way to work with my primary medium of wood.  Maybe something like working with clay, or wood turning.  By combining together some unusual woodworking techniques I’d recently discovered, I invented a new hybrid technique.  My new method let me build composite forms out of smaller elements, allowing me to explore the more free form shapes I had been imagining.”   – Peter Cook
